Microphlebectomy for the Treatment of Vein Disease and Varicose Veins
If you suffer from varicose veins, you are not alone. Up to 20 percent of people experience visible blue, twisty, swollen, large veins. Another 20 percent suffer from varicose veins that run deeper in the leg and are not visibly seen. In either case, it means the vein is not moving blood back to the heart properly, which can lead to major long-term medical complications.
Treating varicose veins is the cornerstone of Allure Medical's practice. Vein specialists at Allure Medical have performed over 200,000 successful treatments across the country with life-changing results for patients.
Vein Treatment: What is Microphlebectomy?
Large varicose veins are not only unsightly, but they can also be painful! Microphlebectomy, also known as ambulatory phlebectomy, is an outpatient procedure that is designed to eliminate large bulging veins without the need for major surgery. It is especially effective for those large veins that are too wide in diameter for sclerotherapy or injections. Microphlebectomy would not be performed if the patient only exhibited surface spider veins.
Microphlebectomy (Ambulatory Phlebectomy) vs. Surgical Stripping
Microphlebectomy (ambulatory phlebectomy) should NOT be confused with vein stripping, which is a technique that is old fashioned, outdated, and infrequently practiced. Stripping methods in the past involved surgery in a hospital setting, with a requirement of general anesthesia-which has greater risks. Stripping techniques would also cause significant pain and bruising, with a recovery time that could last two to four weeks.
Microphlebectomy is a mild vein treatment that can be done in a doctor's office and only requires local anesthesia (tumescent) to numb the diseased varicose vein and ensure patients endure little to no pain or discomfort.
Can Microphlebectomy Get Rid of Varicose Veins for Good?
Like other vein treatments, microphlebectomy allows for the permanent removal of varicosities (varicose veins) and is usually performed at Allure Medical after the varicose vein has failed to react to radiofrequency laser ablation. Microphlebectomy is an outpatient vein treatment that begins by numbing the affected area with local anesthesia, then carefully removing the vein through tiny incisions using a phlebectomy hook.
Once the varicose vein has been withdrawn, there is no negative effect on the blood flow or circulation in the leg. The blood that has been carried by that vein is simply rerouted to another vein deeper within the leg. Circulation and blood flow continue as before, but more efficiently. The only difference is that the large bulge in the leg is gone. If the patient was experiencing painful varicose veins, there is immediate relief with microphlebectomy.
How to Care for Your Legs After Microphlebectomy Vein Treatment
Microphlebectomy is a simple vein treatment with very few risks. After the procedure, the patient's leg will be comfortably wrapped in a supportive ace bandage for 24-48 hours. This will ensure the best possible cosmetic results along with helping the micro incisions heal even faster. Patients are encouraged to wear compression stockings several days after the procedure. The overall downtime is minimal with microphlebectomy vein treatment.
It is perfectly normal to exhibit some bruising near the small incision sites but that will clear up within 1-2 weeks typically. In just a few days, patients are able to resume their normal activities.
