Alopecia Treatment

Alopecia Treatment in Michigan

Alopecia is a type of hair loss that may have many contributing factors. Causes may be related to the immune system, underlying systemic problems, or stress. An examination of the scalp and hair follicles, along with bloodwork, may be necessary to determine the cause and to decide which treatments may be helpful. Regardless of the cause, alopecia can be quite distressing. It may be improved or even reversible in some cases.

What are the symptoms?

Alopecia areata usually begins with hair falling out in round patches on the scalp. Male and female pattern baldness is also quite common. You may notice stubble-like regrowth (called “exclamation point hair.”) or overall thinning of hair without totally bald spots. In rare cases, alopecia causes total loss of all hair on the scalp and body. Some people with alopecia notice changes to their fingernails; they may look rough, like sandpaper, or have small pinprick-like pits. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact us for a consultation.

How is it treated?

Alopecia can be treated with a variety of medications that affect the body’s immune system and with applications of hair re-growth medication.
