Are you tired of all the fad diets, so-called magical weight loss pills and empty promises? Are you ready to make a lifestyle change and become a “new you” in the New Year? At Allure Medical, we offer the ORBERA® balloon, a weight loss procedure that averages a 3x weight loss when compared to diet and exercise alone. You may have heard about ORBERA® and are wondering what this procedure entails. At Allure, we have inserted more balloons than anyone else in the country and our own Dr. Carl Pesta actually trains other doctors on the procedure. So, I’ve been able to hear questions and concerns from dozens of patients. Here are the questions we are asked most:
What is the ORBERA® balloon procedure?
The ORBERA® balloon procedure is an endoscopic procedure which places a silicone balloon, much like a breast implant, into the stomach. This creates a feeling of fullness which in turn decreases the amount of foods consumed.
Is it considered a surgical procedure?
No, the deflated balloon is passed through the esophagus into the stomach and filled with a saline solution, leaving the patient without any cuts, incisions or scars.
Is it permanent?
No, the ORBERA® balloon is FDA-approved to be safely placed in the stomach for up to six months.
What is the downtime?
The body can take a couple of weeks to adjust to the presence of the balloon. But, most patients feel better within a few days.
What are common side effects?
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and stomach cramping. Medications are prescribed to help with these symptoms.
What will I be able to eat?
During the first week following placement of the balloon, mostly liquids will be consumed. At one week, patients can slowly begin to eat normal foods with a focus on green smoothies, vegetables and protein.
Can I get the balloon inserted without making lifestyle changes?
It is important to develop healthy eating habits and a workout regime during placement. This is the time to establish healthy habits that will continue long after the balloon is removed.
Does insurance ever cover the cost of the procedure?
How much weight can I lose?
We have seen weight loss as high as 74 pounds!
