What Causes Acne?
Bacteria Trapped Under the Skin
A plug is formed when oil and dead skin cells are trapped under the skin which creates a space where bacteria can live and acne forms.
A clogged pore is due to oil, dead skin cells or trapped bacteria.
Overproduction of Oil
Everyone has hair follicles that are connected to oil glands. An overproduction of sebum or oil can build up in the hair follicles and form a plug that leads to acne.
Dead Skin Cells
When skin cells die and mix with oil they clog the hair follicle which causes acne.
Eating Greasy Food
Of course, the foods you eat are important for health reasons, but greasy food has little to no effect on the formation of acne or over production of oil on your skin.
Poor Hygiene or Dirty Skin
Dirt on the skin doesn’t create more oil or help form acne on or beneath the skin. Cleansing your face properly to get rid of dead skin cells and removing any oil that is on skin is always encouraged.
It is recommended to use non-oily products because the pores are not being blocked by oil.
Types of Acne
- Whiteheads which are plugged follicles below the surface of the skin
- Blackheads are plugs that are dark in color and push through the skin’s surface
- Papules are firm, pink bumps that are tender or sore
- Pustules are small, red round lesions with a white center.
- Nodules or Cysts are a severe form of acne that are usually very large and painful and may cause scarring.
